PDF forms for financial aid

Berrie investigated a financial form that students thought had to be submited online. The form in question was to be printed and sent, but was misleading in that it requested a typed added sheet. Financial aid has a computer that they allow students to use. The FA staff gave some helpful advice - if you scroll to the bottom of the form you will see a “submit” button if it needs to be submitted online. All others should be printed.

The second computer at Reference is able to submit the online forms without incident, the other computers in the Info Commons are not set to process the form. This is due to the fact that the library's priority is to facilitate library database printing over the Financial Aid forms, which require different settings.

MS Publisher printing

when you print from MS Publisher 2007 (All other Office suite applications are fine), once you get to the prompt to enter your name to print a dialog box appears:

"Waiting for printer to respond: [peacock] or [penguin'".
If you enter the name and hit ok, the message flashes away and the document prints.

Adding money to ID for printing in the computer lab

Double-sided printing

Double-sided printing is not a supported function here in the library. The printer charges per page, not per piece of paper. The user will not "save" money this way, only paper. Also, we can not guarantee that the job will work out satisfactorily.

However, if there is a need to send a double-sided print job from one of the public computers, here are some directions to try.

Select Print
Select printer (e.g., Penguin)
Click on Properties
Duplex option appears on the menu. The default is "off."
Change the duplex option to "open to left."

Continue as you normally would; selecting pages to print, etc.

You may want to test the print job first by just doing the first 2 pages if it is a long document.

Printer errors

I have amended our POYNET Copier troubleshooting guide with an entry about Error Codes in light of our latest issue.

Error Codes

Error codes will be accompanied by a small wrench symbol lit in red on the left-hand side of the copier controls. While this can be caused by hardware issues, often it is a software issue. To fix most software issues, perform a hard reset, as described in step two above.

Here's the snippet from "above" in the section....

Step Two - Soft and Hard Reset - Turn the power button on the right off, and then on (soft reset). If this does not change the situation, turn the power off again and also turn off the hard button on the left-hand side of the printer. Also, turn off the ISOTEL surge protector attached to the machine, this will turn off the change box as well as the printer. (This is a hard reset) Wait 20 seconds, then power it up again.

Landscape prints from Microsoft Visio

A student tonight wanted to print 3 landscape pages in Microsoft Visio. She selected landscape on the printer preferences but at the printer (B/W) it just gave her an error message (“please wait”). We discovered in the error message details that it kept saying that the paper tray selection didn’t match the job request. So we had to manually change out the printer tray and then it worked.

We did a test of printing landscape in MS Word and it works with no problem. So it must just be a problem for certain software. I don’t think anything should be changed – just an FYI.

Printing Word docs from Blackboard

Some Word documents can not be printed easily while viewing them within Blackboard. If you click on the file name from the list screen (not the open document), then you will have the option to SAVE to Temp D. From Temp D, you can open the file in Word, check the print preview and send the file to the printer.

Wireless printing

Question:

There apparently is wireless access to a color printer in the computer lab, and another in the college of business. For folks using Photoshop, they could theoretically print to one of these two color printers, correct? If folks ask us about color printing, should we tell them bout the wireless access?

Berrie's reply:

Yes, theoretically (it has not been tested), and only for wireless users who bring their own laptops, not through our Macs or PCs in the horseshoe. I would suggest that you tell users to visit those facilities, since they will have to go there anyway to release the print jobs.
